Sizing True (ii)

This shoe fits true to size

The best guide for sizing your new Freet shoes is to start with your usual shoe size. Think about whether you always take this size or whether you sometimes need to go smaller or larger.

Customer feedback is that this style fits true to size; so order your normal size.

Our shoes are originally produced in EU sizes. All US sizes are the closest conversion so, if you know your EU size, you may want to consider using this.

Measuring Your Foot

Sometimes as a second check it is worth measuring your foot. Feet can be different sizes so its worth measuring both and taking the largest.

Standing next to a wall place a piece of paper against the wall. Place your foot on the paper with your heel just touching the wall.

The lengths shown are the Insole lengths (the actual shoe length will be 2 or 3 mm longer).

Measuring Your Foot
  • The next stage is easier if you get someone else to help do it.
  • Take a pencil or pen and trace the outline of the foot on the paper.
  • Start at the heel.
  • Keep the pen at 90 degrees to the paper, so vertical, see diagram.
  • Don't draw under the foot.
Keep pencil verical
Taking a ruler measure the length of the outline in millimetres. This will be the exact size of the insole you will need. To ensure the fit is not tight add another 5.0 - 10.0 mm to the length. If you wear thick socks then add that thickness to the length.

Measuring your outline

If possible, please work from the EU sizes (the US and UK sizes are nearest conversions to these sizes so will not be as accurate). The lengths and widths are the dimensions of the insole in mm measured as per the picture below:

Proper hiking barefoot boot?

Only just received them and done a few hikes, too early for a proper review but initial impressions are excellent, could this be the perfect balance between a proper tough outdoor boot and a barefoot boot?
I've been searching for that balance for years and am delighted that I might finally have found it.
Many thanks freet.
Will post again once they've done an English winter but I have faith in them.

Really great fit and shape! Sadly a little too warm and rigid for me and a little bumb on the inside

Really great fit and shape! Sadly a little too warm and rigid for me and a little bumb on the inside, that was bothering me.

The boots are very comfortable, but they eat laces!

The boots are very comfortable but the eyelets are not fit for purpose. The original laces lasted about a week (some word string stuff!) the replacements only a lasted a couple of weeks. Not sure what is going on but they seem to abrade the laces every time you tighten them. Shame because my previous boots had leather eyelets are are super comfortable. Love the grip on those but they scant be tightened properly.

Amazingly comfortable boots

When these boots arrived I took them for a short walk just to check that they wouldn't rub, then set off the next day for three days of walking in Dartmoor, covering about 60km. They were amazingly comfortable from the moment I put them on with no need to break in, with just the right balance of flexibility and protection. My feet always felt free to move but there was no discomfort on sharp rocks.
The sole grips well, despite the slightly shallower lugs than on some conventional walking boots - the foot is free to curve around rocks and obstacles so that more of the sole is in contact, improving grip.
They seem very well made although I haven't had them for long enough to see how well they will wear. In the past I've found that Freet soles last very well compared to Vibram, so I have high hopes there; the uppers will need regular waxing and general care but hopefully the leather will last well.
I haven't seriously tested the waterproofing yet, as the weather has been dry. I trod in a few puddles with no leakage but it remains to be seen how they would fare on a long, wet hike.
The issue highlighted by other reviewers whereby the laces chafe on the upper hooks is definitely there, but not a problem as yet. The upper hooks seem a little tight and sharp - I might have a go at filing the corners off at some stage.
Overall, this is a really great pair of boots - I think Freet have built the best 'barefoot'-style walking boot on the market. I feel like Freet are on a roll at the moment, the Milo is a superb shoe too. I just hope they continue to thrive because I'm more or less only wearing Freet shoes these days!

I send them back

I send them back, because of the rubbing of the thong on a bone of an ankle. Otherwise they were fine. Sorry, but here's the truth.
