Behind the Name- Howgill: Versatile by Nature, Built for Everything
The Howgill Fells are the rolling, open hills that straddle the border of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. Less well-known than their dramatic neighbours, they can often be overlooked - but ask anyone who’s spent time up there, and they’ll tell you: this place is special. Quiet, spacious, and full of subtle challenges, the Howgills are a favourite for walkers and runners who want headspace, solitude, and real terrain.
That’s why they were the perfect inspiration for the Freet Howgill. Built for varied landscapes and shifting conditions, it’s your go-to for days when adventure has no fixed route.
We’ve explored these fells in all seasons, and they’re an ideal place to test footwear. You get a bit of everything - long grassy climbs, steep ridges, muddy dips, fast-moving descents, dry stone paths, and quiet roads - all along one route. The ground underfoot changes constantly, and if a shoe can keep you comfortable, confident, and dry through all of it, it’s probably ready for anything.
And that’s exactly what we made Howgill to do.
Howgill is our barefoot, multi-activity sports shoe - made for movement across all kinds of ground. Whether you’re hiking, running, or just out for the day, the Howgill offers a minimal, natural feel without sacrificing grip or protection.
The upper is made from recycled BottleYarn flyknit, giving it a soft, sock-like fit that’s also water-resistant - perfect for cooler, wetter days. Underfoot, the HillGrip outsole is inspired by animal claws, giving secure traction on everything from wet grass and trails to uneven, off-road terrain.
It’s lightweight, flexible, and versatile—built to handle the kind of days when you’re not sure exactly where you’re going, but you know you’ll be out a while.
Because just like the hills it’s named after, Howgill is quietly capable of more than you think. Find out how here-
